lectures on contemporary world philosophies, recently delivered at UCLA, cover-in order- Pragmatism, Analytic Philosophy, Existentialism, Freud & Modern Philosophy, Communism, Indian Philosophy, Buddhism, Chinese Philosophy and Zen. This is quite a handful. But though the space devoted to each philosophy is limited, it is on the whole well-packed, concise and intelligible. Most of it also is fascinating, acute, neatly phrased and tidily definitive of the many varied ways in which the human mind attempts to deal with the dilemma of life. It is perhaps by its very form and purpose perhaps too composed and fairly thought- out to be an electrifying book (in which of these attractive life-views can one believe?); and one wishes there were more of each; but it is an absorbing study and the clear, thoughtful light in which it surrounds many complex ideas makes it well worth reading and re-reading.
