Hard days from heather time to Hogmanay for the MacNeils, as brother Roddy is driven away from his flock of homing pigeons by his dour, dream-haunted father, the Reverend MacNeil. Meanwhile, daughter Margaret is left at home to earn the family's living working as a librarian for the out of kirk (and therefore suspect) Callum MacKinnon. . . and to practice Christian charity on her father, whose nightmares have a disturbing tendency to come true. A solid core of an idea, but the telling is awkward, the Scots humor inbred, and the romance so stiff you could crack your upper lip on it.
