YONDER THE GOLDEN GATE

I like Miss Darby's stories about girls better than her stories about boys, and this is no exception. While it is an excellent picture of the muddy early days of San Francisco, the wild turmoil of the gold rush, the ups and downs (chiefly downs) of those who staked their all on finding a goldmine, there is nothing particularly new in the twists and turns of fortune in the experiences of 15-year old Joe, and one has a feeling of having read it all many times before.
