What does one do with an 'Endangered Species' that in some places is becoming a nuisance?"" The story of the alligator is part natural history, part politics, say the Grahams, and even their natural history report describes the alligator's life and habits in terms of human reactions and often in the quoted words of human observers. Their comfortably written text really doesn't go into politics, but it does describe the Audubon-inspired protection campaign, the trouble with poachers, and now, because of the program's success, the return of ""nuisance"" alligators and the measures different states are taking to deal with them. Just for bringing the story up to date, this latest entry in the Audubon Readers series should find room on the bulging shelf of alligator books.
