A scrutiny, analytical but non-therapeutic, of the dominant force today, nationalism which the author believed is the basic cause of wars. Here are the characteristics of ""the bitch goddess- the nation state in which we live""; the attributes of race, of nationality; the growth of nationalism which today makes peace impossible; its universality on all levels; the problem of national minorities and the particular problem of the Jew. He takes up the three categories,- the masses, the ""best people"", and a third category of those who have access to truth, who influence public opinion but not to good advantage. The twin problems of politics and economics; the conditions of war, as power has come more and more into the hands of fewer and fewer states, each country acting in its own self interest. Against this he weighs the few factors that operate against nationalism,- education, science, and finally the one hope for resolution in world federation or multi-nationalism, operating under the Sphere of Interest or the Zone of Influence.... An incisive, unillusioned analysis, sobering rather than reassuring, for a serious market- for study and reference.
