The almost-annual dose of agent Quiller--who's just as steely-eyed and warily terse as ever, but this time out his feet hardly touch the ground. How so? Well, Quiller has been dumped because of committing a spontaneous revenge murder on the London tube (a superb, over-promising opening), and his only way back into good graces is a near-suicidal mission: flying an MiG-28D (with Russian markings) right into Russia, flying low and taking pictures. (""Why don't they just send me a letter-bomb?"") The mission goes predictably awry; Quiller lands, scurries around Russian terrain, sleeps with a spy's wife, and is finally ordered to kill the spy (the real objective all along). Fast page by page and acutely detailed--but slow overall and probably too aeronautically inclined to please those who can still remember Quiller's first Memorandum.
