For 25 years Mrs. St. Johns has been writing for the ""slicks"" -- for newspapers, and so on. She's done picture scenarios, non-fiction pieces, novels. This volume is a result of careful sifting for her best short stories, eighteen of them, including selections from her ""Capital Close-ups"" series and her Hollywood series. Each story is introduced with story-behind-the-story material, which gives the collection value for its background material, as much of her writing had news value in its source. A gift for smooth plot pattern, a sense of people and the love, beauty, ugliness of life, of human dignity and human weakness, distinguish many of the stories and pieces in this collection. Not an important collection from the literary standard, perhaps, but a useful object lesson for aspiring writers who would see how it can be done.
