On her way to and from the bakery for the morning loaf of bread, Maria sings her very own song, and it echoes on the lips and in the hearts of everyone who hears her: the policeman, Pete at the newsstand, a worker high on a girder, an old lady and an old man, etc., etc. The theme that music gets through, even in the city, is certainly applaudable but the story goes round and round. . . and comes out as unsubstantial as the pictures.
