THE PATCHWORK QUILT

Nancy-Jo is sick abed, and her busy grandmother makes the time pass pleasantly while her fingers are occupied with some household task and she tells Nancy-Jo stories of a little girl of long ago whose dresses had supplied the pieces for the patchwork quilt. The locale is -- apparently -- not far from the Ohio River, but that is a negligible factor. The story pattern is episodic, with enough suspense carryover to keep a convalescent child interested (as any child is interested who likes the pattern of when-you-were-little-girl). But I felt that the early stories had a bit of a Sunday School flavor, and there was more than a touch of sentimentality throughout. The story of the efforts to raise money for flood relief and the rescue by the Newfoundland Rover alone stand out from a general level of mediocrity.
