WHEN LINCOLN WENT TO GETTYSBURG

A reliable historical writer (see her Seven Brave Companions, Wheat Won't Wait etc.) has placed together quite a readable story about the people concerned with Lincoln's railroad trip to Gettysburg, with enough ""meat"" in it to make this age group sit up and take notice of some of the political issues of the day. Principally it is the story of John Eckert, who actually ran the train between Hanover Junction and Gettysburg. With the news that Lincoln will come to Gettysburg for the dedication, there are preparations to be made, but as Eckert follows through on his, there is also a cross-section of opinion and activity as they are stirred up and reflected by the occasion. Especially, there is the positive though slow reaction to Lincoln's significant speech, and the sense of his rationality in all things. Eckert too, receives a reward in personal terms when Lincoln gives him his own watch and commends him for efficient service.
