Admiral Morison, official U.S. Navy historian, who has given us his huge and monumental history of the USN in World War II, now compresses his wealth of information into one impressive volume for a very wide American audience. In his erse, readable style he tells of how the U.S. Navy was built up under Roosevelt, how it was partially crushed at Pearl Harbor, yet how it rose again swiftly to conduct a gallant, brilliant and eventually victorious full scale war on both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The convoy fights, the battles of Coral Sea, Midway and Santa Cruz, the Mediterranean landings that went on as Pacific island hopping got underway, and finally those huge battles off the Philippines which literally destroyed the Japanese Navy-- these are the highlights of this remarkably all-including work. But Morison's book is not restricted to dry fact. The roar of 16"" guns, the screaming whine of carrier planes, the inferno of invasion beaches are recreated vividly and with great authority, as Morison shows the U.S.N. valiantly in action. The men responsible for the decisions--Nimitz, Halsey, Spruance, King, etc.--are given their just space too, as we see them leading the fight from plotting rooms or the bridges of fighting ships. Vividly illustrated, this is a ""must"" for Americans!
