KIRKUS REVIEW

A superior western set in 1877 in the Texas Panhandle region. Fourteen-year-old Kemp whose father owns the Grown W Ranch and his cousin, twelve-year-old Peter, are initiated into the strenuous cycle of ranching line riding calf branding, bog riding- as well as a trial by fire in battles with Indian tribes resisting confinement on the reservations. The episodic story is fired with fast, hard action realized through an unostentatious but thorough knowledge of ranch life, cowboys and the great plains of the West.
