This is a profound, meditative study of the last hours of Jesus, beginning with the Agony in Gethsemane and concluding with His burial in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea. Drawing on the resources of scholarship, the author fills in the gaps in the Gospel narrative and supplies the reader with information of a political, social and psychological nature, that renders the story of the Passion more intelligible and concrete. The author addresses himself implicitly to most of the questions that naturally come to mind when one reads the bare essentials provided by the Gospel text. The psychological portraits of Annas, Caiaphas, Pilate and Herod are very illuminating. All in all, this is a highly intelligent and deeply moving account.
