KIRKUS REVIEW

Distilling vast quantities of data, Shubert emphasizes Spain's varied history; more than 80% of this book concerns the diverse peoples, literature, and politics in its past. The author places facts and thorough scholarship alongside more capricious hearsay; at least once, he ventures into less-than-objective commentary concerning the character of regional peoples, attributing such phrasing to the Spanish themselves. Still, a mostly credible (if relatively difficult) addition to the ``Portraits of the Nations'' series, dense with information for the determined reader. Photographs not seen; maps; bibliography; index. (Nonfiction. 12+)
