Newfoundlander Jimmy Donovan, thirteen, resents the solicitude of Big Simon, the new friend of Jimmy's widowed mother who has also signed him onto his own fishing ship, the Kathleen II. But when Jimmy, in an attempt to prove his mettle and stake an advantageous spot for the ship, secretly takes the anchored ship's dory on a hazardous night mission, it is Big Simon who leaps ice flows to rescue him from exposure. The two of them then set the lines that Jimmy had come out for, saving the voyage for the Kathleen H and convincing Jimmy of Big Simon's worthiness as a possible stepdad. A boys' magazine type of adventure story, with crude characterization and a rudimentary plot but a passable recreation of the harsh northern locale.
