THE STORY OF SCULPTURE

The highspots in the history of sculpture from the Stone Age figures unearthed at Brassempouy through the friezes, bas reliefs, busts and monuments of archaic Greece, of the Parthenon, of Florence, Venice and Rome, as well as Henry Moore's cryptic symbols, are traced here. There are drawings, rather poor, and photographs which are superior. It is a scholarly book, giving background on the civilizations which produced each type of sculpture. The high school student interested in the arts will not go amiss through familiarity with these silent but enduring spokesmen -- the David of Michelangelo, the Venus de Milo, Hermes by Praxitiles, and Della Robbia's gentle Madonnas. Adults would not find the content beneath their interest.
