The Atlantic Non-Fiction Prize Book, the first since Old Jules. I'd make the tie-up (for market appeal) with Animal Treasure and with Out of Africa. Perhaps even with House of Exile. It is an inside picture of life in North Borneo, as experienced by the American wife of a British official, who shares intimately the things she likes and the things she doesn't like, her problems and the way she (and her husband) handled them. One sees, through her eyes, the natives, the domestics, the members of the European colony. One shares the discomforts and the thrills of jungle adventures. One chuckles over some experiences, and shares sadness over others. It is a vital, human, colorful book, spiced with humor, and alive with the warm personality of its author.
