In the mid-19th century, deep in the Oregon wilderness, a half-Indian boy named Gabriel is raised by two rugged, but kind, trappers. He is lonely until he becomes the owner of a wild colt who has been caught by two snarling hombres. With the aid of this intelligent wild horse, Gabriel rescues some of his Scottish friends who are about to be attacked by Indians. The finished portrait of the boy is shadowy; he and his colt seem to gallop suspended amidst pine needles and waterfalls... the author has not presented a clear or convincing picture of the wilds.
