A collection of sketches, sympathetically and sometimes sentimentally written, detail animal life of the mountain forest. Mostly, they outline the growth of young animals to maturity and what they need to learn and do in order to survive attacks from other stronger animals. There are three baby snowshoe rabbits who learn at last not to be so unguardedly curious; a tiny grouse getting its first eye view of the world; a young porcupine instinctively raising her quills to ward off a prancing coyote. Touches of good nature reporting lighten the narratives.
