KIRKUS REVIEW

Old and forgotten, Dandy and Tiny Teddy are two floppy stuffed bears and Kate a faceless doll. After being thrown into a dustbin ""one day just before Christmas,"" the three find an old toy engine and climb on for a ride which takes them through sleepy towns and past moonlit fields straight to a small house at a railroad crossing where the gate keeper's golden-haired little girl takes them in and tidies them up-her favorite Christmas gifts. It's ordinarily impossible to get away with such blatantly old fashioned simplicity, but Edward Ardizzone makes it all seem as genuine as his antique engine.
