SHAKESPEARE'S SONNETS

A substantial introduction precedes Rowse's presentation of the sonnets in which he has applied the ""historical"" method to clarify many of the conjectural areas. These include dating and identifying the ""friend and then the rival of the poet."" On the page, Rowse gives the original sonnet, with modern spelling and unctuation; on the facing page he paraphrases the sonnet in modern prose and includes commentary. One can wonder whether scholars will accept this more readily than they did his recent biography, but younger, less dedicated students will be grateful.
