BLACK MONASTERY

A war book, depressingly tragic, but the style is electric and the story full of human interest. It is the reverse side of the Cohen-Portheim picture (in Time Steed Still) -- the story of a Hungarian interned in France during the war, shunted from one black hole to another, -- a filthy garage, an island prison in the black monastery, fit only for a penal settlement, underground quarters, intended for the stabling of horses. A terrible story, full of the purposelessness of hate, but full too, of keen insight, sympathy and human kindness.
