MISSION WITH MOUNTBATTEN

Only conscientious students of world wide affairs, and those with a particular interest in India, will take the time to read this play-by-play report on the partitioning of India, six years after the fact. The author was official Press Attache and the book derives from minute notes, kept in diary form during the mission. His praise for Mountbatten is unwavering, and as one reads on one realizes that ""this treaty of peace without a war"" was no easy triumph involving as it did so many conflicting issues and individuals; the Congress Union, headed by Pandit Nehru; Jinnah's Moslem League; and some 565 Princely States which had to sign their individual pacts with either Pakistan or the new Hindu homeland. A clear headed report for those whose interests center here, and of larger documentary value.
