The decision to be a doctor becomes firmly anchored with the experiences that are young Ted Coleman's in this book. When at first Ted plans to get through pre-med on a football scholarship, a family friend, Dr. Bart, takes him to task by pointing out that the two activities would be incompatible and that Ted should take a Job as a Junior intern at the local hospital for the summer to see if that's what he really wants. Ted's days are a rigorous tour of ward duty which, added to his part in a research project and a disastrous fire, strengthens his resolution and prompts Dr. Bart to finance his education. Despite some heroics, useful career material.
