KIRKUS REVIEW

Nourse has written several other books for teens about AIDS, safe sex, and related subjects. Here, he begins and ends with teenage examples that seem out of left field and don't add much; in between, he wisely stays for the most part with description, including some conditions not often covered in teen guides (e.g., chlamydia and non-STDs such as crabs). Most helpful are tips on what to look out for, such as aches in the hips and legs signalling the possible onset of herpes. The chapter on discussing sexual history, abstinence, and using community resources for birth control is balanced and sound, while graphic details in the section on ``living defensively'' (step-by-step instructions for condom use; data on spermicides' effectiveness in STD control) may even save lives. A momentary lapse: in the chapter on AIDS, hemophiliacs are called ``innocent''--meaning that other risk groups are at fault? Glossary; bibliography; index. (Nonfiction. 12+)
