KIRKUS REVIEW

Proletarian novel -- the scene, a mining town in the Illinois coal fields -- the central figure, a boy who has grown up in the community, gone into the mines as a matter of course, became involved in union activities and killed a man. Following his release -- on a hung jury -- he gets deeper into union politics, and at the end faces disillusionment and despair. A serious problem novel, a bit ponderous in the telling, but clearly authentic, as to facts and setting.
