GETTING TO KNOW JAPAN

Nippon, the land of the rising sun, her geography, her citizens, her industries and agriculture, her manners, and her deities are briefly but specifically revealed here. Using a hypothetical family, the author takes a child into the Japanese home, and, from the first instant of removing the shoes at the outside door, contrasts are drawn between Western and Japanese life. A survey of Japanese history is included, both modern and apocryphal. Alan Jakeman does not indulge in the romantic tendency to stress the exotic but, within a limited form, quite clearly emphasizes that Japan is in possession of a complex society, a society dramatically different from ours, but one with which we may quite peacefully co-exist. Essentially a book to be read as a supplement to school work in geography.
