Miss a state divided, not only by the war to come and the issue of but by the infiltrating and the lawless nightriders, provides an authentic background to violence. There, through the bitter winter months, mule breeder Pap Daniels and his two boys, Shep and Trapper, stalk the wilderness for the scapegrace son of their best customer, a proud plantation man. Tyler Ashland, whose boy Rodger is now using politics as an excuse for killing. Rodger's vigilante raids take the lives of many who are innocent as well as as Daniels' father is spared the truth- until the close and so is well born, high handed Julle Dclorme whom Shep loves but Rodger had hoped to marry. And with the outbreak of the war, the personal enmities are laid to rest, along with Rodger and Trapper, as Shep alone survives the long feud.... The literary forbears here The Searchers and The Unforgiven have established Le May in this genre which he endows with a certain literary calibre as well as historical accuracy.
