OPERATION ELVIS

A quick, bright,- perhaps not necessary -- look at the professional and military careers of Elvis Presley which is as much a commentary on the press and the public as it is on its truck driver-singer-millionaire-Private US53310761 subject. This lines up his impressive (depressing?) rise to world wide fame, the frenzies of his audiences, and the garish goings-on over his induction into the Army, while it surveys the problem the Army itself faced, and how it preserved the facade of his ""normal"" military life. Although it is indicated that ""the Pelvis"" behaved better than his many fans and most of the media, it does show up how the fiction was maintained that he was treated ""like everyone else"" (an action of impossible achievement) and how from the training areas here to his station in Germany the ""importance of being Elvis"" broke through, with respectability an added award.
