A has-been by the time she gets to sixth grade, Haley is known to an adoring public as the sarcastic Samantha Love on a hit TV series. Now she's been written out of the show, and the former star has to meet real life head-on. Instead of just being herself, the shy Haley adopts some of Samantha's best lines to win over her new class. Still, Andy Valdez isn't buying it; and when the two are roped into attending a dance together, his cleareyed honesty and her need to be liked nearly ruin their budding friendship. Ferguson is slack on some details (in one evening, temperatures are dropping and there's frost is on the grass, but then a mist begins to fall), and the kids don't always sound like sixth graders, but this is a sweet tale. Haley is most likably vulnerable on her way to school for the first time; Andy's a study in perfection, a boy who really needs to loosen up. Even in these days of 15-minute fame, Haley's funny, humbling lesson is one readers will embrace. (Fiction. 8-12)
