Love, Italian style, with much of the oppressive and obsessive character of the novels of other Italians of the day, particularly Alberto Moravia and Dino Buzzati. Consumed here is Giulio Broggini, 39, from the first moment when he Watches a girl making a telephone call from a bar. She's Ivana, Whose acquaintance he makes via her rather common, lower class parents and who proves to be sulky and uninterested at every encounter. Notwithstanding, Giulio advances his courtship with a diamond ring, clinches it with a check, only to ultimately hear from her pretty, petulant lips how thoroughly diddled he's been by her family as well--""They'd been waiting for you ever since I was born."" Perhaps with no greater hopes of permanence than Giulio's pursuit, this is another one of Mme. de Cespedes' sophisticated, silky and guileful entertainments.
