Writer, lecturer, journalist, editor, professor of history and formerly president of Knox College, Dr. Britt, now in his ninety-third year, reminisces, mainly about life in New York City in the first two decades of this century. Dr. Britt remembers when the arrival of the subway system brought some order to a tangled transportation problem; when ""foreign"" restaurants were beginning to be popular: when electric lights were coming in. Literary figures of the New York publishing world are given some attention, but of considerable interest are Dr. Britt's memories of the political storms of the day--the Spanish-American war (Hearst directing an artist, ""You make the pictures, and I'll furnish the war!""); the ascendancy of T.R.; Tammany in the saddle. Unfortunately this is more of a chronicle than a personal impression but of special antiquarian interest.
