KIRKUS REVIEW

Another important contribution to the cause of Christian reunion. Dr. Albert C. Outler, Professor of Theology at Southern Methodist University and a member of the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches, is concerned lest the modern ecumenical movement, like its earlier counterparts, may founder on the rock of demanding full doctrinal agreement as a precondition to unity. He suggests that by stressing the primacy of the Christian Community, the vital center of which is the unique tradition of the Christ event received and transmitted from age to age, a setting will be provided in which doctrinal agreement can most profitably be sought. This is not a ""popular"" book in the sense that it would appeal to the general reader, but clergy and informed laymen who hope and pray for the reunion cannot afford to let this important book go unheeded.
