This account of the conflict between the U. S. and Latin America gets off to a bad start, so don't be discouraged with the clumsily written early chapters, as it gathers force and smoothness as it goes along. Carter has returned from a ""question mark trip"" through 20 countries (Rosenwald fellowship), and he presents a mass of not adequately checked and digested political and economic data. But once beyond that, his information on political personalities and party trends, his descriptions of ""vital processes of power realignments"" are not to be ignored by those who want to know what the boys in the back patio are up to. He sets minds at ease on Fifth Column problems, feeling that they are on the wane. He pulls no punches -- so may not get back!
