CROSS IN THE CARIBBEAN

The author of Pug (Greystone's Bookman Prize winner) takes a new turn with the story of the erection of a church on a primitive island of the French West Indies, and the conflict between primitive and traditional and modern, Catholic and Jew and native. The church, sent down from France in stone, in modern, bold; the sculptor sent down to carve the is also of the modern school; the French fathers understand no deviation from the traditional and the natives fear and hate the interloper. Malignant acts occur, and the sculptor is saved only by a cataclysm of nature which vindicates him and the church. Study in contrasts -- but limited in appeal.
