PEACE OF ATOMIC WAR

This is the reprint of three appeals broadcast by Dr. Schweitzer from Oslo in April, 1958. His thesis is that the three atomic powers, Great Britain, the United States and the Soviet Union must renounce the use of nuclear weapons before they can begin to discuss disarmament at the Summit Conference. His appeal is dispassionate, but impossible to disregard, because time is running out. If the nuclear powers can be persuaded to give up atomic weapons this will automatically improve the political situation. A far war cannot turn into a near one. Soviet Russia and the United States will no longer be neighbors living in fear of their lives due to nuclear weapons. In the final analysis all countries are dependent on supposing a certain reciprocal trust in one another. The world is faced with a choice of two risks; a mad atomic arms race or renunciation of nuclear weapons and the hope that the United States and the Soviet Union and the peoples associated with them will manage to live in peace. The first holds no hope of a prosperous future, the second does. We must risk the second. Dr. Schweitzer's controversial but humanitarian point of view cannot be ignored.
