This volume consists of a collection of seventeen sermons preached by Schweitzer from the pulpit of St. Nicolai's church, early in his career. Their chief values, as Elton Trueblood points out in his foreword, is in the way they foreshadow themes that Schweitzer was to develop more thoroughly in his mission in Lambarene, Perhaps of greatest interest will be the sermon entitled ""Reverence For Life"" preached in 1919 after Schweitzer had been liberated from the internment camp where he had been held during World War I. The sermons are simple in style and consist largely of Biblical exposition, with terse, personal applications. The decline of Schweitzer's stature as theologian and Biblical scholar in recent years may lead the reader to see these pieces as having principally an historical interest.
