LA SALLE RIVER EXPLORER

A complete biography of the French explorer takes him from his boyhood in Rouen to a treacherous death at the hands of his enemies on the Gulf of Mexico, 43 years later. Familiar as the events are, there is a clarity and freshness to them here as an experienced writer takes them in hand, to tell of the triumphs as well as the tragedies and of the complex of jealousies and hatreds that marred La Salle's dream of empire. Though he was great, La Salle was hard-headed, a man necessarily surrounded by trial and strife, part of it the outcome of his own drive. Recommended as introductory material.
