UNQUIET NIGHT

A novel, in translation from the German, which traces with a faint transcend-ntalism and a stripped simplicity the unquiet night of Private Weik, a chaplain with the German army in the Ukraine, when he is called to another camp to administer the last ites before the execution of a deserter, Baranovski. With only a few hours before him, examines the dossier of the man who is to die, tries to find a human answer to the litary verdict with its extreme penalty, and establishes a contact with Baranowski which rings a measure of acceptance and consolation in the face of the finality of death. But hereas Baranowski is to die, Weik is to live on with the knowledge of a wrong he did not- could not- redeem... A timeless theme, in an interpretation which is gentle, questioning.
