There is nothing sentimental about this life history of a great lion. Although recounted in story form there is more fact than fiction in these pages. The Lion (mercifully he is given no human name) is orphaned when he is a cub and makes his own way thereafter. At five he finds a mate, who is later destroyed with her cubs in a forest fire. Finally, The Lion is shot by a British hunter -- an untimely and tragic death for so magnificent a beast.
