THE ENIGMA OF ADMIRAL DARLAN

A biography of the Admiral by a personal friend and political associate, which suffers from a good case of bias and too indignant a defense of his subject. Darlan's career is given chronologically from his early days in the Navy, his participation in the 1929 Naval Conference, through his gradual rise to power (often by ruthless strategy) and his activities in the Vichy government. The controversial points in Darlan's career are brushed over; one is left to explain for oneself his antipathy to the British, his withholding of the Navy, his relations with the Nazis. The subject and timeliness of publication may attract notice, but this is definitely not the last word on the matter.
