Tanous is a leading spiritualist whose powers have been measured by the American Society for Psychical Research. He's also educated, has a speaking knowledge of nine languages, and has some hopes of becoming a priest in the Eastern Rites Catholic Church. Tanous denies any interest in the occult and supernatural, never refers to ""higher planes"" when describing his out-of-body experiences and claims that his gifts are quite within the natural order. He contends that driving a car at 50 m.p.h. is a far more ""occult"" experience than simply sending one's mind into another room or across the continent. Tanous helps the police find missing or kidnapped people, especially children. He can project pictures on walls and make balls of light appear in his hands (they've been photographed many times); is clairvoyant, telepathic, precognitive, and a medium; and has made contact ""with an energy I believe is not from this world"" (that's an extraterrestrial--an ""imitation"" man he met in a diner who had ""Bette Davis' eyes--only in reverse. Where hers pop out, his popped in, if you can imagine that""). We can't, but it's superior mindbending.
