In an Introduction which she has entitled ""Land of the Noble Free"", Pearl Buck has stressed the note of unity in the one idea of freedom which links all nations, all colors, all races in America. ""The walls must come down if we are to be a free country."" This is a book of superb photographs, America and Americans shown through the camera, an American family album, prepared by a Russian immigrant, of 1923. Differences and similarities, physical appearance, customs, culture, recreation-all races of the melting pot. One could wish there had been some hint of the need for better fellowship in the choice of subjects; as it is, the photographs show people adjusted, happy in America.
