This pictorial history gives a close look at the great age of sailing ships and makes abundant use of the work of contemporary artists and draughtsmen, and some photographs, to provide a panorama of the ships, harbors, events, men and maritime progress in that era. The emphasis here is on the advancement and achievements in seafaring under sail and the contributions made by American creativeness. From a general discussion of exploration and transport, to the colonial times and through wars, and battles, wrecks and rescues, navigation and charts, sealing, whaling and the slave naval architecture and merchant design, the text parallels the pictures and offers an opportunity for the collector and student to view this particularly American manifestation in all its aspects.
