Based on three lectures, this is an informed discussion, by the educator, of a principle of law, the First Amendment to the Constitution, freedom of speech, -- his that it is no longer ""absolute, unqualified"" and that in many ways free speech is What the original amendment maintained; how, since 1919, with the decision of that freedom of speech may constitutionally be abridged by legislative action in his terpretation and argument of ""the clear and present danger""; the Brandeis repudiation the invalid Holmes' decision. Throughout the insistence on the importance that genuine freedom of speech be restored if America is to practise what she preaches to the rest of the world. Meiklejohn's name carries considerable weight in educational and liberal les, though speeches, in book form, seem to have limited market.
