THE THREE KINGS OF SABA

Here is quite a charming retelling of a version of the three wise men legend found in the writings of Marco Polo. Piecing together the details Polo learned at Cala Ataparistan, near Saba, Evers writes in dignified prose of Balthasar, the young strong king, Melchior, skillful and middle aged, and Jaspar, old and wise. All hating each other, they went to Bethlehem hoping for some sign from the new prophet who might tell them who was to rule. But when they find the Christ Child instead, they come away as brothers.
