Three out of the twelve stories in this book deal with an old woman, who periodically shrinks to the size of a pepperpot. This does not restrict the active old woman, who through ingenuity and determination manages to extricate herself from the countless difficulties into which she falls. Just as quaint, and much more plucky than Tom Thumb or Stuart Little, the resilient Mrs. Pepperpot may become a permanent member in the repertoire of children's book people. The other stories here are also uniquely imaginative, revealing the author's gift for bringing the familiar and the fantastic together in a completely entertaining fashion.
