THE GARDENER'S FIRST YEAR

Here's the second of the garden books, and I've selected this for the 9-13 age group, because it seems to combine a certain inspirational quality with facts, basic, important facts for any gardener, presented succinctly and clearly. One point to stress is that, along with fundamentals for planning a permanent garden, the author makes it possible for the young enthusiast to see results in the first year. Preparation of soil -- choice of plants and seeds -- sowing and planting -- weeding and cultivating -- types of plants and where and how to place them -- picking -- names of plants -- tools and books -- insects and other enemies -- everything the beginner will need for not only the first year but many years to come.
