Pester's first novel in seventeen years--a bookful of outrageously clever ideas slapped together without much cement. Takeoff point is an unlikely crew of people who for some reason react to fatal trauma by becoming immortal. By 2080 the Group has been bopping around the planet for centuries picking up recruits, but then it tangles with a Cherokee scientist who no sooner becomes immortal than he's possessed by a mad computer which is possessed by a mad member of the Group who. . . . The best part of this enjoyable mess is the raucous argot Pester invents for his 21st century narrator.
