This is, I believe, the first book of its kind -- a complete chronicle of transatlantic, transpacific ocean-racing sporting events. Beginning with the race to Norway in 1866, he follows the trail down to the present, which he says still marks the infancy of the sport. The Bermuda races, the Queen of Spain cup races, the Fastnet, the races to Honolulu and Tahiti -- highspots of actual races -- personal anecdotal material -- amusing incidents -- the intimate close-up of racing, told by someone who not only knows the sport academically, but has sailed in many of the races he describes. An essential book for everyone interested in racing and sailing. Important for reference libraries, with its roster of crews, register of ocean-racing yachts, section on rules and regulations.
